I hate that exams aren't open book. Doing well on exams like this just means you can memorize well, it doesn't test your ability to problem-solve or to demonstrate knowledge of the subject. Exams should be open book because not only will they measure knowledge of the subject, but also your ability to research and make connections between different concepts.
